As I logged onto class last Wednesday, I was taken back, thinking I had joined the wrong one. Instead of seeing a class of around thirty university students, I saw kids that were under the age of ten. With just getting back from school break; I had forgotten what the class plan was. Once class had started we were put in bigger groups so that we could get to know some of the Mexican exchange students.
The first group was made up of four university students and 3-4 exchange students. It was silent for most of the time because we were all uncomfortable with what we had to do. My thoughts running through my head is what do I say? What if I pronounce their name wrong? What if I can not understand them? But than I thought about how this is a reality stepping into any teaching position. I just had to start the conversation and make them feel comfortable. This group wasn't overly excited to speak over the microphone, so to work up to that we directed them to ask the questions in the chat box. This made it so we could answer their questions without putting them on the spot.
Well I have to say my second group was a whole different story. We were put into smaller groups. I was all by myself for this time around and I was a little bit nervous on how it was going to go. I have to say that this group loved to ask and answer questions. Sometimes I could not quite u7nderstand what they were trying to ask, so the other students in the breakout room helped me out! That is what I mean in my philosophy that a teacher is always learning right along there students!
This experience is one I will never forget. With not getting any classroom time this year because of the restrictions; I have to say that this helped fill that void. Seeing the students so intrigued to learn was awesome to see. I hope that I get to do more of these experiences in years to come!
