Fostering effective relationships

Service Learning Hours Reflection

This second semester flew by with the hours I spent with the Redcliff girls basketball teams. Being able to continue coaching from first semester to second semester made me notice how much the girls had grown with the sport; even how much I had grown from the first tryout to the final game. This volunteer experience gave me the opportunity to practice a few different skills linked with teaching. The commitment, time, and preparing it takes to teach 20 girls the basics of basketball. Every practice I would make a fully detailed practice plan that sometimes we got through, but other times we would only get through half the list. It gave me the experience of how every child is different and some skills you just need to slowed down and teach it a different way if they did not understand the first time. Being able to be head coach to two teams that were filled with girls who had passion in the game made it easy to show up and coach them. It also gave me the opportunity to connect with other coaches and teachers at the schools we played against; whether it be a league game or a two day tournament.  Completing close to 50 hours and still taking five classes at the college sometimes brought some challenges, but I wouldn’t have changed it.

Impact Statement:

This volunteer time has developed me further as an educator. I watched these students develop as a team and how much respect they had for each other. It helped me understand how to demonstrate empathy and genuinely care for these girls. We built relationships throughout the season.

I have been a Cloverbud Arts & Craft leader for two years now. This opportunity gives me time to spend with children and plan lessons that they will learn from October-June
